Costa Rica es la cuarta potencia latinoamericana en turismo

Costa Rica es el cuarto país mejor preparado para el turismo en Latinoamérica, de acuerdo con el Índice Global de Competitividad en Viajes y Turismo 2015, realizado por el Foro Económico Mundial.
Este clasifica a los países de acuerdo a su ambiente de negocios, higiene, seguridad, salud, infraestructura, competitividad de precios, cultura, entre otros.

Nuestro país está en el puesto 42 del ranking global, y es sexto del continente, con una puntuación total de 4,10 sobre siete puntos. Esto significa un ascenso de siete lugares respecto a 2013.
Sus fuertes son la seguridad para los visitantes y la salud e higiene, en concordancia con lo descrito por el estudio, que otorga las mayores puntuaciones a estos rubros.

Los mejores ubicados en la región son Brasil y México, en el puesto 28 y 30 del ranking, respectivamente. Bolivia es el peor colocado, en el lugar 100.
En la cima de la clasificación está España, impulsada por su infraestructura turística, mientras que el último de la lista de 141 naciones es Chad (cifras entre paréntesis indican posición global).

Logró un impulso por la inversión en infraestructura y conectividad con motivo del mundial de fútbol del año anterior y los Juegos Olímpicos de Río de Janeiro 2016. El país sudamericano consiguió entrar en el top 10 en el rubro de viajes de negocios y recursos naturales y culturales.

3. Panamá (34)
En 2014, el principal generador de divisas para este país centroamericano fue el turismo, que en total reportó ingresos por más de $5 mil millones. Eso fue más que lo generado por la Zona Libre de Colón y el Canal de Panamá. Presenta debilidades en el rubro de turismo cultural.

4. Costa Rica (42)
Escaló de la posición 49 a la 42 en dos años, en gran parte gracias a los avances en seguridad ciudadana y la consistencia de su sistema de salud. Estados Unidos sigue siendo el país que más aporta turistas a nuestra nación, según datos del Instituto Costarricense de Turismo.

5. Chile (51)
Es segundo a nivel global en relación a la apertura internacional, relacionado con la apertura de mercado y libre tránsito de personas, disparadores de crecimiento económico. Sin embargo, tuvo un descenso importante en el ámbito de recursos naturales y culturales.
